10 Ways to Avoid Deposit Fraud When Buying a Vehicle
Protect yourself from fake listings, urgent deposit requests and identity mismatches with ten practical verification steps.
A price far below the market, pressure caused by supposed competing buyers and a demand for an immediate deposit are significant warning signs in used-vehicle listings. A deposit sent before seeing the vehicle and verifying the seller's authority can be difficult to recover.
1. Compare the market price
Compare vehicles of similar model, year, specification and mileage. Treat an unexplained exceptional price as a reason for further checks.
2. Verify the seller
Look for consistency between the listing, contact details and registered owner. Do not pay when someone claims to act for a relative unless the owner attends or valid authority is verified.
3. Check the listing images
Images may have been copied. Ask for a current photograph from a specific angle or a live video, while remembering that neither proves ownership on its own.
4. See the vehicle and chassis number
Compare registration information with the chassis number on the vehicle. A photograph of an identity card or registration document does not prove that the person contacting you owns it.
5. Obtain an independent inspection
The buyer should preferably choose the inspection centre. Review mechanical, body, chassis and electronic checks together.
6. Resist urgency
Statements such as “another buyer is coming” are intended to reduce decision time. Do not pay before checks are complete.
7. Put deposit terms in writing
If a deposit is considered necessary, document the vehicle, parties, amount, sale date and refund conditions. Avoid transfers to an unrelated personal account.
8. Verify the account holder
Confirm that the payment account is linked to the registered owner or authorised business. Reject requests for payment to third parties, cryptocurrency wallets or gift cards.
9. Use official secure channels
Complete the final price through an authorised secure-payment channel linked with notary transfer. Open the official banking or payment app directly instead of following links sent in messages.
10. Keep records
Save the listing, messages, account details, receipts and inspection report. Contact your payment provider and the relevant authorities quickly if you suspect fraud.
