What Are Concrete Strength Classes? C25, C30, C35 and C40 Explained

Concrete classes express the characteristic compressive strength that concrete is expected to achieve under defined conditions. In a designation such as C25/30 or C30/37, the first value represents cylinder strength and the second cube strength in MPa. These values must be assessed together with structural calculations, exposure conditions, reinforcement detailing, workmanship and curing.
What do C25, C30, C35 and C40 mean?
- C25/30: 25 MPa cylinder and 30 MPa cube characteristic strength.
- C30/37: A higher-strength option used in many reinforced-concrete applications.
- C35/45: Considered where load capacity and environmental durability requirements increase.
- C40/50: Used for special structural elements requiring high strength, subject to design and specification.
Is the highest class always the best choice?
No. The correct class depends on the structural design, soil conditions, intended use, member dimensions, reinforcement and environmental exposure. Even a higher class must not replace the specified concrete without engineering approval.
What else determines concrete quality?
Transport time, avoiding uncontrolled water addition, proper vibration, sampling, formwork and curing are as important as production. Protecting moisture and temperature during the first days directly supports design performance.
Earthquake-code requirements
For reinforced-concrete buildings governed by the Turkish Building Earthquake Code, concrete below C25 is not permitted. The final class must always be determined by the authorised designer and approved project.
