What to Check When Buying an Electric Vehicle: Battery and Charging Guide

Advertised range alone is not enough when choosing an electric vehicle. Daily routes, home or workplace charging, battery warranty, climate and resale value should be assessed together. The right vehicle is not necessarily the one with the largest battery, but the one that best matches actual use.

Measure daily use

Estimate weekday mileage, long-trip frequency and parking time. A reasonable reserve above daily demand adds comfort, while an oversized battery for an occasional journey can add cost and weight.

Battery capacity and health

Gross and usable capacity are different. For a used EV, review a battery-health report where available, service records and charging history. Dashboard range alone does not prove health because it reflects recent driving and temperature.

Warranty and service network

Vehicle and battery warranties may have different time and mileage limits. Check capacity-retention thresholds, exclusions, maintenance requirements and service access in the written warranty.

Total cost of ownership

Include insurance, tax, tyres, charging tariffs, home installation and possible depreciation in addition to the purchase price. Running cost depends on where and when the vehicle is charged.
