External Wall Insulation: A Technical Guide to Correct Application

External wall insulation reduces heat transfer through the building envelope. A correctly designed system limits winter heat loss and summer heat gain, balances internal surface temperatures and helps manage condensation risk.

More than insulation boards

A complete system includes adhesive, anchors, insulation boards, corner and sill profiles, reinforcing mesh, base coat, primer and finish. Components should be selected as one compatible certified system.

How is thickness determined?

Climate zone, wall build-up, building geometry and the target energy performance must be calculated. There is no single correct thickness for every building.

What is a thermal bridge?

Columns, beams, slab edges, balconies and window surrounds may transmit more heat than adjacent walls. Poor detailing lowers surface temperatures and increases condensation and mould risk.
