Waterproofing is the complete set of systems that prevents rain, ground moisture, groundwater and service water from reaching building components in an uncontrolled way. It is designed not only to stop visible leaks but also to protect the reinforced-concrete structure, indoor comfort and the building's service life.
Why does waterproofing matter?
Concrete is durable, but it is not completely impermeable. Water can travel through cracks, construction joints, service penetrations and poorly detailed connections. Moisture reaching reinforcement may accelerate corrosion and can also cause blistered finishes, mould, odour and reduced thermal performance. A coordinated design is therefore more reliable than local repairs after damage appears.
Foundations and retaining walls
Water pressure, soil, groundwater level and drainage conditions must be assessed together below ground. Tanking systems, liquid-applied products or sheet membranes may be selected according to the project. Protection and drainage layers help prevent damage during backfilling.
Correct roof detailing
Membrane selection alone is not enough on flat or pitched roofs. Falls, outlet capacity, parapet upstands, rainwater pipes and movement joints are all parts of the same system. Water should be removed safely without ponding.
Wet rooms and balconies
Drains, wall-floor junctions and pipe penetrations are the most sensitive points in bathrooms, kitchens, balconies and terraces. The waterproof layer should remain continuous below the finish, with suitable tapes and corner details. A controlled flood test before tiling can reveal defects early.
